Visceral Manipulation

Visceral Manipulation Summary:

Visceral Manipulation is a gentle approach to free tension in the tissues around our organs and their attachments to each other and our diaphragm and bones.

This may help with:

  • A better position of the bones of the spine, ribs and pelvis and balanced tension of elastic like lining fascia to minimize pressure on organs, assist in their rocking and contracting motions; and to help the space around the nerves and blood vessels to and from organs be free to do their jobs.
  • Help organs be in a good position or adapt better to their neighbours; including help lessen tension of the elastic like fascial around the esophagus and top of the stomach to allow the stomach to lower when the top of it is being pulled into the diaphragm.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release Summary:

Myofascial release is a way to work with the lining tissue of our body called fascia. It is very gentle and includes both being present to the direction that the fascia likes to go and assisting the fascia to go where it doesn’t like to go. Scar work is a high priority and includes using this technique at all depths of the tissue involved in the scar. This helps restore the ability of the tissue layers to glide well and move in health and not around a tight, stiff scar.

This may help with:

  • Normalizing scar tissue and the many disruptions that are a result of them.
  • Help the layers of elastic fascia be better able to glide on on each other, and have even lengthening and recoil in all directions and among neighbouring tissues.
  • Allow bones and organs to have more balanced tension around them for good position and movement.
  • Optimize the performance and partnership of the elastic type lining fascia tissue and the tendons at the ends of muscles to be efficient

Nervous System

Nervous System Summary:

The nervous system is the system made up of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, the tips of nerves that receive information (receptors), and chemicals that influence the electrical signals that get passed through it – to the brain, within the brain, and out of the brain to other tissues. We use our nervous system both consciously and subconsciously – eg. to pick up an object is conscious and to keep breathing when we are sleeping or focusing on other tasks or to digest food is subconscious. The tension and pressure throughout the lining of the brain and situation of the structures around all of the structures of the nervous system impact how they live and function. Osteopathic Manual Therapy impacts this and its functions.

Lymphatic & Circulation

Lymphatic & Circulation Summary:

The soft matter that moves through the vessels of our body, that we often think of as fluid, is an important part of transporting and delivering nutrients and removing waste. Our arteries carry the nutrient rich blood with things like oxygen and sugar for energy from the heart to all our tissues, and veins carry the blood that didn’t leave the artery system back to the heart. Our lymphatic vessels pick up the waste that has gotten into our tissues outside of the blood and carry it as lymph (protein rich fluid) which needs to be returned to our venous angle and then to the heart or to the kidneys and liver to expel them.

Lymph vessels helps transport extra water outside of the blood, larger molecules like proteins, bigger fats and cells called lymph. They carry it to groups of nodes that the lymph vessels go in and out of that act like factories that cleanup the lymph, fight invaders, and choose what to expel. The whole lymphatic system impacts our immune system. We have a problem with our lymphatic system called lymphedema when we have swelling that isn’t shortly after an injury or surgery or burn. The gold standard to treating lymphedema is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) – a combination of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) therapy, compression and exercise while compression is on. MLD is a specialized hands on treatment by someone specialized in helping move lymph fluid and choosing where it is best to be moved. It is not good for someone with lymphedema to have a type of massage that stimulates extra blood circulation to come to an area and deposit extra fluid into the space in the tissues when their lymphatic system isn’t able to remove much fluid at a time. Amy is certified in CDT.

Having the organs related to our blood be in a good situation in our body and helping our diaphragm muscle that crossing our chest cavity to be relaxed and moving well helps our blood to have less disruption. We also need to ensure that muscles aren’t gripping the vessels just like we don’t want them to grip nerves. Amy includes both CDT and important Osteopathic Manual Therapy and sensory components to work thoroughly with circulation of the body.

This may help with:

  • Help the tissue around the heart be more balanced and relaxed to allow for more efficient pumping.
  • Help the collar bone, first rib, and diaphragm give good space and rocking and pumping actions to allow the venous blood and lymph flood that are returning from the arms, legs and abdomen to move on the last part back to the heart.
  • Assist areas where lymph nodes and vessels are stagnant and causing congestion.

Bone & Joint Work

Bone & Joint Work Summary:

Working on bones themself is often an important part of restoring the position and movement of the two bones at their joint (where they connect). Joint work can include oscillation – a gentle rocking type motion done with the body’s rhythm which is calming and freeing, or impulse adjustments that help a body tissues feel more comfortable being in a more helpful position and to regain more balanced and efficient motion. The style of impulse adjustments that Amy uses within the spring of the tissue, not forcing anything, creating a reflex along with the direction stimulus and letting the body choose how to respond.

This may help with:

  • Help bones absorb pressure better and handle tensions with more balance - this allows them to be able to contact neighbouring bones more efficiently.
  • Improve stressful positions of 2 bones connecting together so that they support weight more efficiently and lessen stress on soft tissue around them.

Cranial Work

Cranial Work Summary:

Cranial work includes working with the tension within the bones of the head and face. It also includes working with the tissue inside the head, and with its connection down the spine to the sacrum which sits between the hip bones. Releasing tension on the brain is often especially impactful. It’s valuable for children to receive cranial work before and during orthodontic work to help the surrounding bones and tissues be in the best relationship possible.

Amy has done a significant amount of continuing education in the area of tongue and mouth function and sleep. She can help assess for an anterior and posterior tongue tie (frenulum restriction) and how to use the tongue to stabilize the jaw and neck and relax the body.

This may help with:

  • Assist in optimizing the relationship of the temporal bones and muscles of breathing so that the position of bones in the body and function of muscles is consistent with all phases of breathing.
  • Lessen tension on the brain.
  • Lessen the stress that is put on the jaw / TMJ joints to compensate for the rest of the head and face.
  • Normalize the situation of the monitoring receptors in the ligaments attaching the jaw bones to each other that can get heightened/stressed when they repetitively getting stressed from lengthening in a certain angle.
  • Lessen irritating sensations that linger from dental work.
  • Finding and treating drivers of a tight jaw.
  • Increasing the flexibility of the tongue muscle and the fascia that goes from the base of it down the throat.
