A lady wearing black who's left side and back is in view is sitting on a therapy table with a female manual (hands on) therapist (Amy) sitting on a stool facing the first lady with Amy is pressing her hand against the outside of her left arm to muscle test while creating a sensation on the right side of her body.

Neurological Patterns

Neurological Patterns:

Human bodies are made to sense, process and adapt to feedback about our experience and naturally be efficient for each of our unique circumstances. To optimize efficiency in our coordination patterns it’s helpful to minimize disruptive messages to the brain and optimize the freedom of our tissues to allow for the most efficient order and speed of firing of our muscles during our activities.

A pattern that is strengthening to the body is an X. We make an X with our body when we walk and when our tongue moves food back and forth from one side of our mouth to the other. The more symmetrical and efficient that these activities are the more we assist ourselves with processing adapting to stresses we experience.

Reflexes

Reflexes Summary:

Reflexes are body responses that happen automatically without our conscious control. Reflexes are there to help protect us – and some are only meant to be present in babies for this purpose, and then go dormant. Sometimes reflexes become hyper-active for the context and are disruptive due to overwhelming information going to our brain. Amy is trained to get to find the root cause of and treat many of these disruptions so that our body can more often work with and for us instead of against us. Amy also often uses deep tendon reflexes in her treatment.

Gait/Walking

Gait/Walking Summary:

Good quality walking to improve your function and strength

  1. What good walking means:
    • Walking as symmetrical as possible (same length of steps and amount of arm swing with right and left sides.
    • Having the opposite arm go forward with the opposite leg.
    • Having a little rotation in your torso (letting your pelvis/hips move a little with your stepping leg and your shoulders move a little with your opposite swinging arm.
  2. Even 4 good steps helps can improve your immediate quality of muscle activity.
  3. If you need to use a walker than try to rotate your torso a little right to left as you walk as long as there is no increasing stiffness or pain as you do it.
  4. Using Urban Poles walking poles or, if need to, Canadian crutches is much better than a can or a walker if you can do it safely without a lot of pain as they let you move with opposite arm and leg and get a little rotation in your torso.

The above information is based on neurology research by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jose Palomar.

Muscle Testing

Muscle Testing Summary

In order to do the activities that we want we need our muscles to not only feel good to a manual therapist or ourself when we touch or rub them, but we need to know that they are effective in creating force.

Amy specializes in testing a muscle’s function, and when a muscle is either weak, slow or guarded she is trained to get to the bottom of it to often make on the spot changes to a muscle’s strength and efficiency and how a group of muscles can work together to perform a task.

Amy also specializes in how normal muscles that aren’t related to an annoyance in the body can be effected under certain circumstances, and how to use a muscles response to the brain to learn about what message the brain received from a stimulus somewhere in the body.
